School PrototypesBBT created a highly successful "neighborhood concept" school design, and has used the prototype eight times over, including:
More projects are currently under construction. The design consists of a facility that will house an average of 600 K-5th grade students, four classroom wings each, consisting of six classrooms surrounding a central activity space. The wings surround the common area of the building, which typically includes a gymnasium, theatrical space, music room kitchen, media center with computer lab and administrative offices.
The prototype also includes energy saving as a top priority. All prototypical classrooms have an abundance of natural light and ventilation, along with sustainable features such as areas of natural and restored vegetation that require little, if any, irrigation. One of these prototypes, William Miller Elementary, was the Bend La Pine School District's first LEED-certified educational facility. At the time of the school's opening in 2009, it was the only LEED Gold certified educational facility in Oregon east of the Cascade Mountains.
