Walker Elementary School Remodel and Addition

Walker Elementary is a historic school at the heart of Ashland, embedded within a network of established neighborhoods, a nearby park, and other civic amenities. Its setting reflects a deep connection to the surrounding community, both in history and in daily use.

The design thoughtfully links the new addition to the original school through a renovated library and cafeteria, creating a cohesive whole that honors both shared identity and distinct character. The library is repositioned as a central hub for learning, while the cafeteria serves as a physical and social bridge between the two wings.

The project also reimagines the administration area, relocating it from the historic building to improve security, visibility, and day-to-day operations. This move allows the original wing to expand its educational programming, supporting contemporary needs while preserving the building’s historic integrity.
